The great database project is underway!
I finally got the database from Nikki, got it online, and got an influx of about 6k worth of cards. So, I scrapped all of the quantities she had and had to start counting all over again to make sure I don't get myself lost in what was there, what sold, and what came in.
Good news is, I'm slowly making progress! I'm starting with the editions and, after some serious software writing today have gotten up to a decent layout and interaction and almost everything I have from Revised, as well as 4th Edition and Chronicles sorted out. Also have my Dark, Legends, Fallen Empires and Mirage on deck.

What I'd like from you guys is some deck concepts, codified as best as you can. This'll all be added to the database so that when it all goes live you'll be able to pick a deck type and search out cards specifically for the deck.
IE A Traditional Burn would be Red, Direct Damage, and Cheap (for the most part). Weenie would be Red, White, Green, or Black, feature mostly 2/2 powered creatures or so, cheap cost, 2-3 mana, and several of them, along with odd bits of control ala Wrath, Damnation, Nevinyrals Disc, etc.
So, anyone who can contribute, please drop a post here with your deck concepts and lets see what we can do with the database!!

just decks in general, or for certain formats? And for code, what kind of code do you mean, do you wish to provide an example of what kind of tags your looking for?

If anything, heres a T2 list of Red Deck Wins I built and am testing. I started with a basic 20/20/20 build and added the firebrands to use as a hasty finisher and -the shocks.

4x Greater Gardagon
4x Keldon marauders
4x Mogg Fanatic
4x Mogg War Marshal
4x Magus of the Scroll
2x Vengeful Firebrand
4x Incinerate
4x Rift Bolt
4x Shard Volley
4x Dead//Gone
2x Shock
1x Pendlehaven
2x Keldon Megaliths
1x Kher Keep
16x Mountain

Well, syntax and what not is nonexistent at this time, but I need ideas and deck archetypes, types of decks but not necessarily deck lists if you know what I mean.

IE White Weenie is a good deck archetype, and rules for it would be something like:
- Colored White, White & Green
- Non-land mostly creature
- Power/Toughness between 1/1 and 2/2
- Converted Cost around 1 and 2
- Spot removal (Pacifism, Oblivion Ring, etc)
- Mass removal (Wrath, Armageddon)

"Burn"
- Colored Red
- Majority non-creature spells
- Ping creatures if any
- Converted Costs around 1 to 3
- Instant preferred over sorcery
- Mass removal (Jokalhops, Nev's Disc)

Kinda like that, rules for deck design as opposed to deck lists.
Idea then is to have the cards tagged with features, such as "Burn" or "White Weenie".
Then, say someone new to Magic hops on the site and was told they'd like a Burn deck, or a Control deck, or a Weenie deck, they'd be able to tell the program what kind of deck they want, how much they're willing to spend, etc, and the system would pull a deck list from the store inventory based on the information entered.
It'd use weights on the tagging to determine what to go in, so that a Lightning Bolt would rank above a Shock, unless doing so would be past the customers spending limit.

so how about something like this?

W/U control, a classic deck since magics invention. Relies on card advantage and responding to your opponents plays. Almost never plays a spell on their own turn, unless its the decks finisher. Can deal with any situation in the form of bounce, counters and mass removal. Requires thinking and can be hard to pilot for new players.
Key Cards: Unsummon, Mana Leak, Counterspell, Wrath of God, Swords to Plowshares, Mohamiti Djinn, Think Twice

That's about the idea~ More bullet pointed; as few words as possible, but yea. I'll be reducing as much of it as I can to raw mathmatics (spellpreference = "Instant" > "Sorcery" for example, power_toughness <= 2, cost <= 2, etc), so the less I have to muddle through the better.
And, when done, you'll be able to log in & tag cards, vote on them, etc.

mono-red burn

Plays 20 or less land

Damage>Casting cost 1mana=2 or 3 damage, 2mana= 3 damage

all spells can be turned into damage

plays few, if any creatures (mogg Fanatic, Ball lightning)

expends resources quickly

can do 10 damage in a turn, easily

Runs very few 3 mana cards (Browbeat, Char) and nothing costing more.
instants preferred

Likes spells that improve as time passes or have many uses (Flame Burst, Kindle, firebolt, Lava Dart)

fire blast or landslide used as the last volley (Lands into damage)

Life gain gives the deck troubles, as does discard

Rock- G/B or G/B/x

Rock is all about efficiency,
biggest cheapest creatures (Midrange)(Ravenous Baloth)
strongest cheap removal (Terror, Last Gasp, Deed)
always runs an CA (Card Advantage) engine (Phyrexian Arena)
Runs the best cards pound for pound, Think in a vacuum
Runs 4 of either BoP or Lan Elfs for acceleration
Has an early AND late game, making no game unwinable.

I also think we need a database for commonly used terms such as CA, 20/20/20, aggro, bolt, sweeper and whatnot.

A jargon dictionary at the very least, some kind of mouse over bit or what not. Cause even I was lost on a bit of that, lol!

CA-Short for card advantage, card advantage means having more cards than your opponent, and therefore more options. Examples include Tidings and Ancestral Vision

187- Creature that has a comes into play ability. Examples: Man of War, Mulldrifter, Shriekmaw.

20/20/20- Aggro term for building a deck that contains 20 creatures, 20 lands and 20 other, usually burn spells

Bounce- Card that returns something to its owners hand. Examples include boomerang and disperse.

Paris- Mulligan to one card less than previous. 7 cards to 6

Sweeper- Card that destroys all cards of a certain type. Examples include Wrath of God and Shatterstorm, also known as mass removal.

Spot removal- Card that destroys another card. Examples include shatter and terror.

Pump- Card that gives +X/+X or +X/0. Ex:Giant Growth

Burn- Card that deals damage to a creature and/or player. Ex. Shock, Lava Axe

Cantrip: card that says Draw a Card. It replaces itself when cast and tends to do a little bit extra. EX: Serum Visions, Peek, Guided Strike

2 for 1- one card trades for 2 others. EX: your 3/3 is blocked by a 2/2 and 1/1. All 3 are destroyed you you just gained a 2 for 1 since your 1 card traded for 2 of theirs.

Aggro- agggresive deck, trys to win the game as quickly as possible using efficient weenies and cheap burn/pump. EX-RDW

Combo- Wins the game using a preset plan. Ignores what the opponent does and trys to achieve its goal as fast as possible.EX: TEPS, Dragonstorm

Control- Plays for the late game, Trys to gain CA and as many 2 for 1's as possible. plays both spot and mass removal. EX: Mono-U Control, Next Level Blue

U-Blue R-Red W-White B-Black G-Green

Well this is a start, i'll add timmy, johnny and spike and things I forgot later.

These may be longer since I took them straight from an MaRo article.

Timmy-What sets Timmy apart from the other two profiles is that Timmy is motivated by fun. He plays Magic because it’s enjoyable. Timmy cards, as we call them, tend to be big creatures or spells with big effects. In general, Timmy cards are exciting but not too economical.

Johnny is the creative gamer to whom Magic is a form of self-expression. Johnny likes to win, but he wants to win with style. It’s very important to Johnny that he win on his own terms. As such, it’s important to Johnny that he’s using his own deck. Playing Magic is an opportunity for Johnny to show off his creativity.

Spike is the competitive player. Spike plays to win. Spike enjoys winning. To accomplish this, Spike will play whatever the best deck is. Spike will copy decks off the Internet. Spike will borrow other players’ decks. To Spike, the thrill of Magic is the adrenalin rush of competition. Spike enjoys the stimulation of outplaying the opponent and the glory of victory.

DCI-governing body of Magic, they are the judges, they decide how cards interact, they ban cards, they unban cards.

Affinity-
Affinity is an aggro deck is based on the Affinity mechanic. Like any other aggro deck, it's plan is to cast creatures and attack with them for lethal damage before your opponent has a chance to react. It is very fast, has card draw, and can create virtual card advantage through on-board tricks and card synergy.

Cheap critters such as 0-mana orthopter make cheap frogmites and myr enforcers

Artifacts make color requirements easy, normally paired with U for thoughtcast and R for shrapnel blast

Ravager, instant equip cranial plating and modular make combat always in your favor

does not like artifact hate!

Dredge-U/B

A very quick deck, referred to as the 2nd most powerful deck of all time by some pros. Abuses dredge cards like Golgari-Grave Troll and draw/discard(Draw 1, Discard 1) spells to create a large graveyard to bring back Akroma, and a large amount of tokens from Bridge from Below.

Can win on turn 2 Yikes! Runs few lands >20

Graveyard hate such as Tormod's Crypt is bad. Creatures that sacrifice are also bad because they remove the Bridge from Below's.

Flame-Kin Zealot turns all zombies into 3/3 Haste, normally enough to win the game.

I know you don't want decklists, but I feel the combo decks kind of need them to explain how cards interact.
4  Cephalid Coliseum
4  Flooded Strand
1  Island
2  Polluted Delta
4  Watery Grave

1  Akroma, Angel of Wrath
1  Cephalid Sage
1  Flame-Kin Zealot
4  Golgari Grave-Troll
1  Golgari Thug
3  Ichorid
4  Narcomoeba
4  Putrid Imp
4  Stinkweed Imp
4  Breakthrough
4  Bridge from Below
3  Cabal Therapy
4  Careful Study
2  Darkblast
3  Dread Return
2  Tolarian Winds

Faeries U/B
Control-Aggro
Faeries do everything! Counter spells, tap, untargetable and even steal your oppenents creatures!

Bitterblossem- Long term threat, gives a win condition and control players can't just wrath because more guys will still be coming in.

Oona Blackguard- makes bitterblossom fae bigger and when they hit, cause discard!

Fae have flash, so they can keep counter mana up, play creatures before blocks and everyone else comes in EoT.

Can race aggro, since there counters are also creatures!
Has access to terror and even burn (psionic blast)
